TRICARE West Coverage for TMS Therapy in California

If you have TRICARE West and you’re looking into treatment for depression, you don’t have to sort out the insurance side alone. California TMS Clinics offer NeuroStar TMS therapy, and our team can help you check your benefits, understand what approvals your plan may need, and figure out what to do next.

TRICARE covers outpatient transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for eligible adults with major depressive disorder (MDD). How Does TRICARE West Handle TMS Coverage?

TRICARE covers TMS only when its clinical and plan rules are met, and the rules depend on your plan type. In California, the TRICARE West Region is administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. Referral and prior authorization requirements depend on the applicable TRICARE rules and your circumstances, so confirm the requirements before beginning treatment.

Here is what a TRICARE review of TMS usually looks at:

01

A confirmed depression diagnosis

Your provider documents major depressive disorder (MDD), including your current symptoms and clinical assessment.

02

Previous treatment

Your medical records show previous antidepressant treatments and responses, as required by TRICARE West’s current coverage criteria.

03

Measured symptoms

Your provider may use a validated depression rating scale to assess symptom severity and track changes throughout treatment.

04

An FDA-cleared device

TMS uses a device cleared for the relevant indication. California TMS Clinics uses NeuroStar TMS technology for eligible patients.

05

A qualified provider

Treatment must be provided and supervised by appropriately qualified clinicians who meet applicable TRICARE and California requirements.

06

Referral or authorization

Your plan may require a referral or preauthorization before you receive treatment. Confirm the applicable requirements with TRICARE West.

Will My TRICARE Plan Cover TMS Therapy?

You have major depression

A clinician has confirmed the diagnosis.

Medication hasn't been enough

You've tried antidepressants without enough relief, or the side effects were too much.

You pass a safety evaluation

Your provider reviews your medical history, including certain metal implants or devices and any history of seizures.

NeuroStar is also cleared as an adjunct for MDD in adolescents 15 to 21. Whether your plan covers this age group should be checked.

Which TRICARE plans should I ask about?

TRICARE offers several health plan options, but coverage and referral rules depend on your specific plan. If you have one of the following, ask TRICARE West how its TMS requirements apply to your benefits:

TRICARE Prime

Referrals are generally required for specialty care, subject to plan rules and exceptions.

TRICARE Select

Referrals are generally not required for TRICARE-authorized providers, but prior authorization may still apply.

TRICARE Reserve Select

A premium-based plan for eligible Selected Reserve members; TMS authorization requirements still apply.

TRICARE Retired Reserve

A premium-based plan for eligible retired Reserve members under age 60; confirm your coverage and authorization requirements.

TRICARE Young Adult

Eligibility and referral rules depend on whether you have the Prime or Select option.

TRICARE For Life

Medicare-wraparound coverage for eligible beneficiaries with Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare coordination and applicable TRICARE requirements may affect how your care is covered.

Frequently Asked Questions

TRICARE may cover TMS for major depression when its requirements are met. Your plan type and medical history decide the outcome, so benefits are checked before treatment.

Plan types such as Prime, Select, and others may differ in referral and authorization rules. We help you understand where yours stands.

It depends on which TRICARE plan you have. Some plans need a referral from your primary care manager, and TMS may also need prior authorization. It’s worth checking both before you book, so there are no surprises later.

TriWest’s published TRICARE West TMS policy limits coverage to major depressive disorder and does not cover TMS for other conditions under this policy. Although NeuroStar has separate FDA-cleared indications, those indications do not guarantee TRICARE coverage. Confirm the applicable policy before considering treatment for another condition.

Possibly. TRICARE covers active duty, retirees, National Guard and Reserve members, and eligible family members, with differing plan rules. We'll review yours.

No, they’re two separate programs. TRICARE is the health plan for active-duty service members, retirees, and their families. VA care is run by the Department of Veterans Affairs for eligible veterans. Because the rules and coverage differ, it helps to check which one you have before you plan treatment.

NeuroStar is FDA-cleared, and the most common side effect is discomfort at the treatment site. There is a rare risk of seizure (under 0.1% per patient). Results vary.
